Castleton State College is a public liberal arts college located in Castleton, which is a town in Rutland County, in the US state of Vermont, with a population of more than 4300 inhabitants, at the time of the 2000 census.
The college was established in 1787, first starting as the Rutland County Grammar School, and began its transition to a college in 1867, when the State Normal School was founded in Castleton. It became Castleton Teachers College, in 1947, and, in 1962, it became part of the Vermont State Colleges.
Today, Castleton State College offers its students more than 30 undergraduate programs in career preparation and the liberal arts, including graduate programs in education.
Cstleton State's athletic teams are called the Spartans and they compete in NCAA Division III, in the North Atlantic Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC). Their distinctive colors are green and white.
